My inspirations - texture

February 1, 2017

So, in this little series of blogs I will be sharing my inspirations with you, I started this last month where I focused on my childhood, and how that ultimately lead me here...

Today I will be sharing some of the TEXTURES that I am drawn to...

I can't quite explain it, and most find it a bit odd, but I find certain textures extremely pleasing to look at. Colour also plays a big part, I suppose...

TEXTURE! I just love it!

So, I think this stems from childhood too, the idea of mermaids treasures washed up on the shore covered in barnacles, rusted and eroded, how things change over time, patterns and colours that organically evolve....

RUST is quite beautiful in my eyes; now, don't get me wrong, I don't just want all my things to go rusty! I am simply saying that given the right context rust can be intriguing and inviting and a great source of artistic influence... things like old keys, and little tins full of collected scraps...

GRAFFITI is another one... well, i suppose maybe it isn't, but paint or decorated walls in general, i particularly love them when they are worn... even better when there are layers upon layers which are all wearing away to reveal snippets of each other in a vague and secretive way...

WOOD the more rustic the better: be it tree bark (especially gnarled roots, or covered in moss/lichen), old stained floor boards, or warn out old boxes...

BEACH this is very vague, but I love most things to do with the beach anyway... calm water with sunlight shimmering on it, frothing crashing waves, sand, barnacles, salt-eroded lost items, underwater reefs, shells, starfish...you name it...

BEAUTY IS EVERYWHERE  I even find myself stopping to stare at lampposts / electrical boxes / signs / etc where paint has peeled away and the metal beneath is rusting and eroding in speckled patterns...

ARE THERE ANY TEXTURES THAT SPEAK TO YOU?

IN TERMS OF THEIR VISUAL STATE, OR EVEN IF IT'S ABOUT THEM BEING TACTILE

If we are talking about feelings rather than the way things look, then I am all for feeling the world under my bare feet (particularly warm sand!!!), I also love chunky knits in super soft fibres (just scrunching them in my hands is lovely).
